Social Science Grade 7

Course Overview

This course covers American history from its indigenous past to the Reconstruction Era while always making connections to the students’ world today. Students will examine how the American identity was shaped, challenged, and expanded upon by those who lived here, moved here, and were forced here. Students will study how geography affected the identity and development of the nation and its diverse cultures. In this course, students will examine how the push for power, money, and land led to and encouraged the oppression of native peoples, enslaved people, women, and more. Students will study the ideals in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution and examine how the government lives up to those ideals or falls short. Students will study how individuals and groups rose up to fight oppression. This course will also explore the United States’ role in the world by examining the beginning of its movement toward global leadership. Students will study the effects science, technology, and economics had and continue to have on the development of the United States.
