Rachel Brick

My story

My name is Rachel Brick, and I started teaching in New York City in 2008 before moving to Chicago in 2014. I taught in Hermosa for the past six years, and I am excited to join Sullivan High School in Rogers Park for the 20-21 school year. I entered education and have stayed in the classroom because I believe that access to high quality education, supports, and resources is a right for every child. I serve students who are learning English as a new language, and I am committed to ensuring that their home languages, cultures, and stories are honored, celebrated, and represented in their classroom.

My equity challenge and how I work on it

In my classroom, our year-long focus is on how we communicate with and advocate in the world around us. Students focus on developing their voices to share their ideas and advocate for the issues that they are passionate about.

For my own learning, I have found the Teaching Tolerance and National Museum of African American History & Culture websites to be invaluable resources. I also follow the work of Dr. Jose Medina, particularly his recent "coffee talks" with ABAR educators and experts, around the intersection of dual language and anti-racist work.
