Getting to Know an Exceptional Student from Brooks College Prep

Oluwadara

We have so many exceptional seniors who will be graduating from high school later this year, and Oluwadara is among the best. She has loved her experience at Brooks College Prep the past four years, describing it as a supportive environment where everyone works together to push its students toward new levels of success. This culture has helped her experience both academic and personal growth.

One highlight of her senior year was being named a Posse Scholar, which means that she has received a full-tuition scholarship to attend Oberlin College next year. We caught up with her to learn more about what this accomplishment means to her. Read more about her journey below.

What are your interests both inside and outside of the classroom?

Inside the classroom, I do well in my reading and writing classes, and I like math as well. However, I would say that my favorite subject is art because I feel like I can relax and let go when I’m in it. That actually connects to what I enjoy doing outside of school because I like to crochet. I also like hanging out with my dogs and playing video games.

What is one of your favorite memories of attending Brooks?

Every year, near the beginning of the school year, we have students versus staff competitions in a bunch of different sports. This has gotten more fun over the years because you get to know the teachers better.

How has your senior year been going?

It’s been going well. I’ve definitely been learning about time management because I have an internship at West Monroe Partners, so I’ve had to balance that and my schoolwork. We’ve also had a lot of events. Our senior council is doing a great job. We recently all went skating, which was so much fun.

What was your reaction to being named a Posse Scholar?

I felt so relieved and happy because I was so nervous. The hardest part of the process was waiting to hear back. I’m glad that all the work I put in over the past four years is being recognized.

What are you looking forward to most in college, and where do you see yourself in the future?

I’m looking forward to the freedom as well as the classes. The classes at Oberlin are very interesting, and they also have very good professors. I’m excited to be able to make more choices about what I learn. In the future, I’m hoping to have my own speech pathology clinic.

What advice would you give to future Brooks seniors?

Advocate for yourself when you need to. The teachers here are very understanding. I also think that time management is extremely important to being successful.

What is your message to everyone who has supported you in high school?

I definitely want to say thank you for sure. I appreciate all the support I’ve gotten throughout these four years, and I hope we stay in touch.
