Take Five with Stephanie Braggs: First-Grade Teacher at Claremont Academy

Meet Mrs. Stephanie Braggs, a first-grade teacher at Claremont Academy in West Englewood, and the winner of a recent award from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE).

A CPS graduate herself, Mrs. Braggs joined the District as an educator in 2000. As a teacher, she leads with love and high expectations, and wants her students to know that she truly cares about them and their success.

No one in Mrs. Braggs’ family was surprised when she became an educator—growing up, she was always the teacher for her many cousins. However, her path to the teaching profession was uncertain. A first-generation college graduate, Mrs. Braggs didn’t have a clear roadmap for higher education. But she did have drive, a dream for her future, and a strong support system. 

Mrs. Braggs earned her college degree while raising her own children. This wasn’t easy, but she was motivated by a desire to show her kids that with hard work, it’s possible to achieve your dreams.

Earlier this year, Mrs. Braggs received a 2024 Award of Special Recognition from ISBE. This award honors Illinois educators who have made extraordinary contributions to public schools across the state.

How did you feel when you received this award from ISBE?

I was so honored to learn that a parent had nominated me in the first place. When I heard that I actually received an award, I was overwhelmed with joy. This work can be challenging, and it’s really humbling to know that I’m making a difference. It was a special opportunity to reflect on what I’ve accomplished, and I felt very appreciated. It is an honor that I will cherish.

What are your biggest goals as an educator?

I want to help my students become lifelong learners and critical thinkers. I also aim to teach them the importance of perseverance and integrity. I want my students to leave my classroom prepared for second grade and ready to soar. 

What are you most passionate about in your work?

Literacy is very important to me. When I first got into teaching, the thing that jumped out at me immediately was how many students struggled with reading. And while I love teaching phonics, comprehension is also a big focus of mine. Reading comprehension is a foundational life skill; this is how we teach students how to make inferences, draw conclusions, explore themes, analyze information, and become critical thinkers.

What do you love about your school community?

Claremont is a wonderful community. I have incredible support, and the professional development I’ve received here has helped me take my teaching to the next level. Also, the students and families are amazing!

What do you like to do outside of school?

I love crafting. When I’m not teaching, I run a small embroidery business called Simply Stephanie's Cafe and Tee Shirt Boutique! I love to make things for my students and decorate my classroom.
