Meet Ogden International High School’s Posse Scholars

Johnnie and Trey have been students at Ogden International High School for the past four years, and they’ve made the most of their time there. From excelling in athletics—Johnnie has played baseball while Trey has played basketball—to taking college-level classes to even obtaining an internship with JPMorgan Chase, they have much to be proud of as their high school journeys wind down. 

One of their most recent accomplishments has been being named Posse Scholars; Johnnie will attend Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Upstate New York, and Trey will also head east to attend Trinity College in Connecticut. Get to know both of them more below. 

What are some of your favorite memories while attending Ogden? 

Johnnie: One of my favorite memories is baseball-related. My freshman year, we made it to the city playoffs. We didn’t win, but it was my first year playing baseball. I play in the outfield—right and left fielder. 

Trey: This isn’t a single memory, but building connections and relationships throughout my years of being at Ogden is what I have enjoyed the most. I’ve done this by participating in different extracurricular programs such as student council and finding friends with similar interests. 

What strategies have you used to succeed in your college-level classes? 

Trey: I try to have good time management skills, ask questions when I need to, and maintain a good relationship with my teachers so they understand my needs and can support me in learning the material. I also have gotten to know my peers so I can lean on them when I need to. 

Johnnie: I always try to make sure that I’m caught up on my classwork because if you fall behind, it can be a struggle to catch back up. I always make sure to study before tests. 

How did you react to finding out you were a Posse scholar? 

Johnnie: When I first found out the news, I didn’t really have any words to explain how I was feeling. 

Trey: I was very grateful and happy that I had this opportunity in the first place. Grateful really is the best word to describe it. 

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? 

Trey: I plan on majoring in economics so I can return to the business field since I’m working at JPMorgan already. In 10 years, I want to be able to leave my imprint on a corporation or some aspect of the banking world. 

Johnnie: I’m going to college to pursue physical therapy. Even though that isn’t a dedicated major at my college, they have the classes required for me to learn how to become a physical therapist and take the required exam. 

What advice would you give to the students who will be students at Ogden in the future? 

Johnnie: I would say asking questions when you need help. This is something I’ve struggled with myself, but I’ve gotten better at it. It can help you with everything from finding better ways to solve math problems to structuring your essays. 

Trey: Don’t be afraid to step outside of the box or do something that no one else is doing. I stepped outside of my comfort zone and joined the Genesys Works program after they gave a presentation at our school. This led me to my internship at JPMorgan. 

If you could sum up your time at Ogden in one word, what would it be and why? 

Trey: For me, it’s been “eye-opening.” I’ve learned so much not only about myself, but also about the world around me and the people I’ve met. 

Johnnie: It’s an unconventional word, but I would say “soothing.” Since our freshman years were impacted by COVID-19, I think I entered Ogden a little anxious. But, in going through the high school experience, I think I’ve calmed down and am not as anxious about the future now.
