How One High School Student Is Laying the Foundation for a Successful Future
05 December 2024
Meadow has taken advantage of early college opportunities.
Meadow is a senior at Kelvyn Park High School. She’s been at the school since she was a freshman, and she describes it as a great environment for her to grow both academically and socially. She’s made a lot of friends and likes her teachers as well.
Not only is she making the most of her high school years, but she’s also preparing for her future by taking early college classes. She is on track to become the first student at Kelvyn Park to earn more than 15 college credits before graduating. Learn more about her experience below.
How has your senior year been going so far?
It’s been pretty good. It’s a little stressful because my early college classes are a lot of work, but I’m really motivated because I know they will help me in the future, so I like getting my work done.
What prompted you to take early college classes?
I like that they prepare me for the future so I get a little exposure to what classes might be like in college. I also like the challenge, and I feel like I am pushing myself to be better and use my brain to its full capacity.
What early college classes have you taken?
Last year, I took two math classes. Those were definitely very challenging, but I managed to get through them. This year, I’m taking English. I would say that’s been harder than math because it’s so much reading and writing. I like reading and writing though, so that definitely helps.
Did taking some early college classes last year change how you approached them this year?
Definitely. I feel like I was a bit unprepared for them last year because I didn’t fully know what to expect. Now, I have better habits, like turning in my work as soon as I can and not waiting until the last minute.
What advice would you give to other students who are planning to take early college classes?
Turn your work in and do it as soon as you can. Pay attention in class. Make sure to ask your teachers questions, even though it might be scary sometimes. And make sure you have good attendance.
What are some of your goals for the rest of the school year and beyond?
I want my grades to be as good as possible. I’m aiming for all As, maybe a B. I also obviously want to graduate with as many college credits as I can. And I already got into the college I want to go to, so that has definitely taken a lot of stress off me.
