Becoming a Healing-Centered District / Un distrito centrado en la sanación

Shifting our perspective to view students as agents of their own healing and wellness is a key step to help them reach their full potential.
The term “healing-centered” was introduced by Dr. Shawn Ginwright in 2018 to represent the incompleteness of the term “trauma-informed” when referring to supporting young people. According to Dr. Ginwright: “A healing-centered approach to addressing trauma requires a different question that moves beyond ‘what happened to you’ to ‘what’s right with you’ and views those exposed to trauma as agents in the creation of their own well-being rather than victims of traumatic events.”
Shifting our perspective to view students as agents of their own healing and wellness is a key step to help them reach their full potential. As we push through a year of social, political, and public health crises, how we can help our schools heal is top of mind. The district’s new Healing-Centered Framework will be our roadmap to support the social and emotional wellness of our school communities. Here are three things you need to know about it:
1. All stakeholders are involved in creating healing-centered schools.
- Students are agents of their own healing. They use the resources provided to heal and build skills to live healthy lives.
- Staff actively promote mental wellness and support students who have been impacted by trauma. They also support their own wellness.
- Families and community members advocate for the supports that students need to heal.
2. Being healing-centered means following core values that C.A.R.E.

3. There are five key ways schools will help students and staff heal.
- Education and Awareness: Students and staff will learn about trauma and mental wellness.
- Skills and Strategies: Students and staff will develop ways to cope with stressors and manage trauma.
- Culture and Climate: A school’s physical environment will promote wellness and belonging.
- Resources: A combination of people and programs will address trauma and promote healing.
- Crisis Support: The CPS community will promote recovery after a trauma-inducing crisis.

El término “centrado en la sanación” (healing-centered) fue introducido por el Dr. Shawn Ginwright en 2018 para representar la inconclusión del término “informado por el trauma” (trauma-informed) al referirse al apoyo a los jóvenes. Según el Dr. Ginwright: “Un enfoque centrado en la sanación, para abordar el trauma, requiere una pregunta que cambia de ‘¿qué te sucedió?’ (‘what happened to you’) a ‘¿cómo puedes estar bien?’ (‘what’s right with you’); y considera a los individuos expuestos al trauma como agentes en la creación de su propio bienestar en lugar de víctimas de eventos traumáticos”.
Cambiar nuestra perspectiva para ver a los estudiantes como agentes de su propia sanación y bienestar es un paso clave para ayudarles a alcanzar su máxima potencial. A medida que avanzamos en un año de crisis social, política y de salud pública, la forma de ayudar a nuestras escuelas a sanar es lo más importante. 3. Hay cinco formas clave en que las escuelas ayudarán a los estudiantes y al personal a sanarse.

- Habilidades y estrategias: Los estudiantes y el personal desarrollarán formas de hacer frente a los factores de estrés y de gestionar el trauma.
- Cultura y entorno: El entorno físico de la escuela promoverá el bienestar y la pertenencia.
- Recursos: Una combinación de personas y programas abordarán el trauma y promoverán la sanación.
- Apoyo en situaciones de crisis: La comunidad de CPS promoverá la recuperación después de una crisis que haya provocado un trauma.
