Dance teacher Ms. Gina LeTempt says that she hopes each one of her students from Peterson Elementary in the North Park neighborhood will see every episode of the educator-created EncoreTV as a “getaway” from being cooped up inside while learning at home. A typical episode includes a variety of exercise, art, and music activities to enhance students’ learning. The show also gives students an opportunity to form new connections with the teachers they miss dearly. 

“Healthy emotional learning starts with building relationships, which is a big reason as to why we all became teachers in the first place,” said Mr. Jeffrey Oliveira, a choir and music teacher at Peterson. “We wanted to show our students that we are going through this as well and we’re all in this together.” 

The idea for creating videos on YouTube stemmed from a conversation between several teachers about the importance of engaging students in ways that can be accessed at any time during the week. Each teacher creates a piece of the EncoreTV experience, and then the videos are edited together alongside a catchy theme song to round out each episode. Music teacher Mr. Erik Juhl says the production has been a valuable learning experience for each member of the EncoreTV team. 

“I think everyone has had a lot of time to grow throughout this process and now we’re adding in some extra shots or playing around with different transitions,” said Mr. Juhl. “Everyone has a different chance to shine and explore some new skills that they maybe haven’t had to explore before.” 

One of the most important parts of the EncoreTV experience is the fact that students can engage with the episodes whenever they want. In the morning, they can draw pet portraits with visual arts teacher Ms. Bethany Crino and her new puppy, take a few hours to get their schoolwork done, and then return to the episode in the afternoon to do some exercises with P.E. teacher Mr. Nick Spychalski. Each episode is meant to be fully accessible and fun for every student, regardless of their ability level or background. 

“We wanted to make sure that students had all of the information they needed at all times using materials that they could easily find around the house,” said STEM teacher Mr. Anthony Tournis. “It makes the learning process so much simpler when all the resources are at their fingertips and all they have to do is log on and watch.”

Maestros de la Escuela Primaria Peterson interactúan con sus estudiantes por medio de la creación de su propio programa de televisión

Gina LeTempt es maestra de danza en la Escuela Primaria Peterson en el vecindario de North Park. Dice que espera que todos sus estudiantes vean cada episodio del programa EncoreTV, creado por educadores, para que se distraigan de estar encerrados mientras aprenden en casa. Un típico episodio incluye una variedad de actividades de ejercicio, arte y música para mejorar el aprendizaje de los estudiantes. El programa también les permite conectarse con los maestros que tanto extrañan. 

“El aprendizaje emocional sano comienza con la construcción de relaciones, que es una razón principal por la que nos convertimos en maestros en primer lugar”, dijo Jeffrey Oliveira, maestro de coro y música en la Escuela Peterson. “Queríamos mostrarles a nuestros estudiantes que nosotros también estamos pasando por esto y que lo enfrentaremos todos juntos”. 

La idea de crear videos en YouTube surgió de una conversación entre varios maestros sobre la importancia de mantener la participación de los estudiantes a través de una plataforma que pudieran acceder en cualquier momento de la semana. Cada maestro crea una parte de la experiencia de EncoreTV, y luego los videos se editan conjuntamente usando una canción principal llamativa para completar cada episodio. El maestro de música Erik Juhl dice que la producción ha sido una experiencia de aprendizaje valiosa para cada miembro del equipo de EncoreTV. 

“Creo que todos han tenido tiempo para mejorar a lo largo de este proceso y ahora estamos añadiendo algunas tomas adicionales o probando diferentes transiciones”, dijo Juhl. “Cada uno tiene una oportunidad diferente de sobresalir y explorar nuevas habilidades que tal vez no las habían descubierto antes”. 

Una de las partes más importantes de la experiencia de EncoreTV es que los estudiantes pueden participar en los episodios cuando quieran. Por la mañana, pueden dibujar retratos de mascotas con Bethany Crino, maestra de artes visuales, y su nuevo cachorro, luego pueden dedicarse unas horas para terminar sus tareas escolares.Y por la tarde, pueden volver al episodio para hacer ejercicios con Nick Spychalski, maestro de educación física. Cada episodio es totalmente accesible y divertido para todos los estudiantes, independientemente de su nivel de habilidad o antecedentes. 

“Queríamos asegurarnos de que los estudiantes tuvieran toda la información necesaria en todo momento utilizando materiales que pudieran encontrar fácilmente en la casa”, dijo Anthony Tournis, maestro de STEM (ciencias, tecnología, ingeniería y matemáticas). “El proceso de aprendizaje es mucho más sencillo cuando todos los recursos están a su alcance y cuando todo lo que tienen que hacer es conectarse y ver videos”.
