The number of students who live in the Central Area region has increased by 560 students (12.2%) since 2020-2021, which is less than the 5.1% citywide decline. The K-8th grade population has increased by 7.0% (less than the 9.0% decrease in total CPS K-8th grade student enrollment) and the 9th-12th grade population has increased by 13.9% (less than the 3.1% decrease in total CPS 9th-12th grade student enrollment).

The number of students enrolled in the region has increased by 143 students (1.7%), which is less than the student population decline in the district. For the past four years, there have been more students enrolled in the region than living in the region. K-8 enrollment in the region has decreased by 5.4% and 9-12 enrollment has increased by 4.2%.

There are 1,872 more seats than students enrolled in the region, including 1,872 elementary school seats and no available high school seats.

How Many Pre-Kindergarten Seats Are There for the Student Population?

In the Central Area region, there are 260 Pre-K Seats, 92% of which are in full-day programs and 8% in half-day programs.

In the Central Area region, there were 229 students enrolled in Pre-K as of the 20th day of school (September 18th, 2023), 91% of which were in a full-day program. 91% of Pre-K students were 4-year-olds, while 9% were 3-year-olds. Pre-K students continue to enroll over the course of the school year.

There were 31 unfilled Pre-K seats in the Central Area region as of the 20th day of school (September 18th, 2023), 31 of which were full-day seats. The full-day programs were 87% filled while the half-day programs were 100% filled. Pre-K enrollment continues to occur over the course of the school year.

In the Central Area region, there has been an increase of 60 full-day seats over the past four years, a 33.3% increase. This number has increased by 20 seats since last school year.

4-Year-Old Enrollment Over Time

In 2023-24, there was a 13% increase in enrollment (23 students) of 4-year-olds in full-day Pre-K programs in the Central Area region. In 2020-21, the district experienced a sharp decline in Pre-K enrollment, consistent with a nationwide decrease in Pre-K enrollment.

Pre-K Enrollment by Race/Ethnicity

The proportion of Pre-K students identifying as Black is 47% compared to 38% of Kindergarten students, while the proportion of Pre-K students identifying as White is 16% compared to 20% of Kindergarten students. For most regions, the racial/ethnic identities of students are similar in both Pre-K and Kindergarten. In some cases, the proportion of each racial/ethnic group may change when comparing Pre-K to Kindergarten.
