Career Day

A career day is an activity in which business partners from a variety of companies come together at a school to share information about their workplace, their job, and the education and skills that are required for success in their career.

Career Awareness

Career days are activities in the Career Awareness stage of the work-based learning continuum, which provides authentic experiences to all students engaged in career-related programs or courses of study in Chicago Public Schools.

Designed to meet specific learning objectives, a career day helps students connect what they are learning in school with the workplace. They listen to speakers or navigate the event independently, seeking information about the industry and the career options it provides. They also learn about the education required for entry into the industry and about participating in a business's role in the local economy.

Purpose

Career days expose students to a variety of careers and jobs by connecting them with business partners. The activities are designed to:

  • Provide a realistic picture of the workplace.
  • Help students make the connection between school and the workplace.
  • Inform career planning.

Structure

Career days offer an opportunity for students to listen, receive information, and ask questions. The activities are structured to:

  • Enable students to begin identifying areas of career interest
  • Elevate students’ comfort level in interacting with adult professionals
  • Provide a setting where students can demonstrate their communication skills
  • Support classroom preparation, including research on the industry and participating businesses
  • Assist Employer orientation and support.
  • Create opportunities for students to reflect upon the experience both verbally and in writing

Format

Career days are supported by four formats that deliver unique experiences to students and employers. The activities are organized through:

  • Two, 40-minute panel sessions with 30 to 40 students participating in each session.
  • One, 40-minute panel session with 80-100 students, followed by small groups for follow up and an interactive activity.
  • Career Day booth format where students visit booths that are staffed by employers and network.
  • Guest speaker series where industry representatives rotate and visit different classrooms.

Outcomes

Career days help students learn about future workplace opportunities through events hosted by business partners in the community. The activities are connected to:

  • Individual career development and/or training plans.
  • Future work-based learning activities.
  • The student’s next steps.
